Baby's First Christmas Stocking - The Story
Posted by on
On Christmas Eve around the country excited children will be hanging up their Christmas Stockings ready for Santa to drop down the chimney and deliver their presents. But have you ever wondered why stockings and why fireplaces?
There are many traditional stories from various countries but they all have one thing in common - footwear or hosiery. One of the most common tales in Britain is based on the character of Saint Nicholas, also thought by some to be the basis for Father Christmas.
Apparently Saint Nicholas was out and about on Christmas Eve donating gifts to the peasants when he came across a very poor man who had three daughters. Because he was so poor he couldn't afford to give them each a dowry which, in medieval times, meant they couldn't get married.
Saint Nicholas took pity on their plight and on his way home dropped three gold coins down their chimney which landed one coin in each shoe drying by the fire and the girls had their dowry!
It's a lovely tale but perhaps it's more likely that stockings left hanging by the fire to dry also made a handy place to leave presents of fruit and nuts for each child in times when it was vitally important to keep healthy in mid-winter.
These days children have a wealth of presents each year but the first Christmas with your new baby is unique and their very first Christmas Stocking is an item that all parents love to give as a precious keepsake, holding memories that will never be lost.
